Developing a Disaster Plan (Live Online)

All libraries, archives and museums need knowledgeable staff and advanced planning to deal with the emergency situations that arise. This preparation allows for a quicker response and helps to minimize damage. A disaster plan requires the support and commitment of staff from many departments, including facilities and accounting. Plan preparation is most successful and effective when undertaken by a committee with staff representatives from across the institution. Course homework assignments will reflect this planning and require input and support from a variety of staff members.
Taught in three two-hour sessions over the course of three weeks, this class guides participants through the development of a written disaster plan. The modules cover establishment of a planning structure, information gathering (including risk assessment and resource list development), setting recovery priorities, an overview of recovery procedures, plan development, and working with disaster recovery vendors.
Participants are invited to submit their completed plans for review by LYRASIS preservation staff.

Grant Writing for Digitization and Preservation Projects (Live Online)

This four-hour class, which will be offered online in two-hour increments for two successive days, focuses on preparing for and writing grants for digitization and/or preservation projects. Since most digitization and preservation grants are funded through the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC), this session is based upon those particular granting entities' requirements. Developing proposals for state, local and foundation funding sources will also be addressed.
The workshop includes matching your institution's project with the appropriate funding agency and preparing to write a proposal. The majority of the class is spent covering the elements of a grant proposal and practicing writing those elements.

Emergency 911: Decision Making for Managers (Live Online)

Disaster can strike at anytime in any locale, disrupting operations, threatening human safety, and damaging or destroying collections. The repercussions of a major disaster can impact a library or archives for years following the incident. Having an emergency management plan in place before disaster strikes makes good business sense. An organized approach to recovery will help mitigate damage to collections and facilitate the resumption operations. Institutions that view emergency management as critical and provide staff with the authority and tools to plan will ultimately respond more successfully than those that have not prepared.
The focus of this two-hour class is to outline the key actions that administrators need to employ to coordinate an effective and efficient response to a disaster. Because a broken pipe will be handled very differently than a major flood, response procedures are discussed according to the severity of the disaster. Other topics included are the components of emergency management, managing staff during and after a disaster, working with vendors and contractors, sources of federal and statewide assistance, and strategies for cooperating with other institutions to facilitate recovery.
